This Issue! Things Get Worse! #121
The Uncanny X-Men #121
“Shoot-Out at the Stampede!”
Chris Claremont and John Byrne
Synopsis
Cyclops, Storm, and Colossus face off against Alpha Flight to rescue Wolverine and Nightcrawler!
Rolling Commentary
Page 7. Hmm. I find it just a little ironic that in regular continuity the first time Colossus and Northstar meet, Colossus attacks him. In the Ultimate Marvel universe, they’re dating. Hm. Also, I’m glad Nightcrawler and Wolverine weren’t as winded as it looked like they were.
Page 8. It’s official practice in all comic books that whenever you have a character of Native American descent in a book, his super powers must in some way reflect that heritage, and he must refer to Caucasians as either “the White Man” or “Pale-Eyes.” No matter what. That being said, his totem golems are pretty sweet.
Page 9. Snowbird=Lame.
Page 10. Is that John Byrne making his necessary cameo in the restaurant? I'm really not sure.
Page 12. Go Nightcrawler! Show her how to mix combat and sexiness skills!
Page 15. Cyclops/Wolverine Roll Reversal Go!
Page 17. Puny Canadian Military. They’re no match for the Wolverine!
Post Mortem
Yay for crazy amounts of violence! Yay for Sasquatch (even if he just a Canadian Hank McCoy)! Yay for Northstar and Aurora! Shaman was pretty cool too, mostly because of his golems. Those ruled. Snowbird is still mega-lame, though.
Now, 20 issues ago, the team would totally have let Wolverine get taken away, and Cyclops would feel just a little bitter about losing another teammate under his watch. Low, how things have changed. It’s been gradual, certainly, but the X-Men are really and truly a family now, and the dynamic between them proves that. As soon as Cyclops and the team get away from the Canadian air force, Cyclops’ mandate to rush in and rescue him- well, it hasn’t been that long since those two were trying to kill each other.
But could we finally let Jean know that Scott isn’t really dead? That poor girl has been thinking that for the better part of a year now!
